SC stays Gujarat HC order issuing notices to 27 sitting, former judges

The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed a Gujarat High Court order, issuing notices to 27 of its sitting and former judges over allotment of government plots to them. A bench led by Chief Justice HL Dattu also issued notices to the Gujarat government and Registrar of Cooperative Societies. A bench of the Gujarat High Court, led by outgoing acting Chief Justice VM Sahai, had on Monday issued notices to 27 judges, seeking their replies on the 2008 allotment of residential plots.

PIL in SC challenging National Judicial Appointments Commission

Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), on 13th February 2015, has filed a PIL in the Supreme Court challenging the latest Constitutional Amendment creating National Judicial Appointments Commission for the appointment of Supreme Court and High Court Judges. CPIL has argued that it violates the basic structure of the Constitution since only a full-time body which functions with transparency can make proper appointments.
